A very good article in terms of creating awareness among the medical fraternity. There is a need for medical practitioners/specialists to understand and acknowledge the role of therapeutic nutrition in the holistic and long term management of several disease conditions.

I just suggest to keep the length short, so that it continues to hold the interest of the "target audience". It can be written in a series..like short articles...will have more impact I feel.

Congratulations to Dr Naveen for conceiving the idea of doing this.

Dr. Pera's paper is very informative. A Healthcare Facility should compliment medical treatment with nutritional practice. Food indications and contraindications with medical intervention must be considered. It is my personal opinion that Physicians as a group are poorly prepared to make nutritional assessments to compliment the medical prescriptions with healthcare treatment. An example of this is that I was a patient in a hospital for 8-days. During that time period, I was given the choice of menu's and I chose "Vegetarian" for health outcome. I performed a dietary analysis of the foods I ate during my stay only to discover that the sodium content of this "Vegetarian" diet was 13000 mg sodium daily as opposed to my normal intake of less than 2000mg/day. The point of quoting one example of errant practices is that Healthcare Dieticians need to be empowered to write strict patient-centered diets to treat and compliment medical prescriptive results.

If the Physician has a background in nutrition, this should be written into the patient's treatment orders...if not the Dietician should impose strict nutritional guidelines.
