  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The results indicate that the water supplies of Chennai are suitable for drinking as per the guidelines. But the author was not mentioned which guideline was followed. Because in some parameters he mentioned BIS in others WHO.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Good

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

The results were not compared with the referred articles.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    NA

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Valid. But it should be updated.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Identification of the type of microbes will be useful.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

    Good

THANKS FOR REVIEWING MY ARTICLE,MOST OF THE ARTICLE EITHER DO WATER QUALITY OF SOURCE WATER OR WATER QUALITY IN SOME POINTS IN DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM ONLY,BUT IN OUR STUDIES,SYSTEMATICALLY EVALUVATED THE WATER QUALITY OF SOURCE WATER,AFTER TREATMENT,AND WATER QUALITY IN TWO TRUNK MAINS WHICH RUNS SEVERAL KILOMETERS,BY TAKING WATER SAMPLES AT DIFFERENT POINTS ,AND IN DEADEND DISTRIBUTION POINTS,SUCH STUDIES ARE NOT AVAILABLE ,HENCE RELEVANT LITERATURE ARE CITED.FURTHER,WHEN WATER QUALITY IS COMPARED,W.H.O.STANDARD IS REFERRED AS INTERNATIONAL LEVEL,AS IT IS FOLLOWED IN THE GLOBAL LEVEL,HOWEVER,FOR THE LOCAL PURPOSES,EITHER B.IS OR INDIAN STANDARD ..IS REFERRED.THIS ARTICLE WILL GIVE US THE WATER QUALITY OF DRINKING WATER SUPPLIED TO THE PEOPLE.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The claim of potability of drinking water can be held good for the reason that many of the microbiological parameters seem to be within WHO limits. The physico chemical parameters are also within the limits. The methodology adopted and the sample size are also reasonablt good for makinthe claim

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

Yes definitely the claims are so important and novel. But the veracity of the claim can be established only with the parallel findings /reports by the drinking water supply monitoring agency and the incidence of the report of water borne diseases incidents in the area of study

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    Yes

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Standard protocol as per WHO followed

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Parallel reports of CMWSSB could have been discussed

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

Suitable for a technical paper presentation in a symposium

I PROFUSELY THANKFUL FOR THE COMMENT MADE ON MY ARTICLE AS A REVIEWER.YOU HAVE ALSO GIVEN THE 7 POINTS SCORE.I AM THANKFUL TO YOU ,YOU HAVE ALSO ASKED ME TO COMPARE THE RESULTS WITH THAT OF WATERBORNE DISEASE PREVALENT AMONG CHENNAI,OFCOURSE,I SHALL CONSIDER THIS . THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF EVALUVATING WATER QUALITY IS NOT ONLY TO SAY IT IS POLLUTED,BUT I HAVE SUGGESTED THE SUITABLE CHLORINATION OF WATER PREVENTS MICROBIAL GROWTH AND ULTIMATELY WATERBORNE DISEASES IS CONTROLLED.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Author investigated, the physico-chemical and microbiological quality of drinking water supplied to the community area in Chennai under Chennai Metro water supply system. Poor quality of water is not only etiologically associated with diseases in humans but also responsible for other kind of economic losses and hence continuous monitoring of drinking water supply in any municipal area is an important task.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

Claim is not novel; thisis a kind of survey work.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

This paper looks like a part of author’s Ph.D. thesis work, so it is properly supported by previous works.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Monitoring of municipal water supplied requires extensive data collection from different point, there should be a clear demarcation between the sources and the sink, and sampling must be performed throughout the year, at every point of supply, in order to established that , from where the contaminants comes from.

    Based on APHA (1998)

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

A year based sampling, sampling at each distribution point, by increasing number and frequency of sampling etc. can increases the quality of paper.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

    Regular paper

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The results indicate that the water supplies of Chennai are suitable for drinking as per the guidelines. However, the TDS level had exceeded the permissible limit in one station and the level of Iron was higher than the desirable limit in most of the stations of water supply in the study area. The contamination of microbial flora of water was also reported occasionally so suitable measures have to be taken to chloriante the water.
