Larvae Count in Nigeria
Posted by Dr. Wilco C Jacobs on 05 Nov 2012 03:25:21 PM GMT

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The paper claims to have found differences in development and survival of a specific type of mosquito larves in North-Central Nigeria.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Yes.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Partly. The survival of the larvae in their natural habitat should also be estimated (although this would be much more difficult).

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    No protocol was provided.

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

One could wonder whether the amount of samples (4 from 4 sites) are sufficient for any conclusions. It is not described how the samples from one site were spatially spread. Also, the survival in this experimental setting might be overestimated with the absence of natural enemies.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

It would also be interesting to know what the density or amount of mosquitos, larves are in this area compared to other areas and other species.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

No, for that it is too sepcific and too far off of my own field. But for the interested specialized scientist in this area it would be an interesting fact to add to other similar knowledge.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

A descriptive study describing the survival of mosquito vectors at 4 different sites. Purpose is to explore whether survival of a particular species of  culex mosquito differs at various sites. If found so, than it would dictate that vector control strategies should be worked out on local basis.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

Yes, considering the species studied in the paper.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    Not applicable

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Yes

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Yes, with different species of mosquito vectors to see whether these results are also applicable to other species.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

Yes, as very few vector studies are presently being carried out in developing countries where they are needed the most in view of the burden of vector borne diseases in these countries.
