  • Other Comments:

The authors find that the prevalence of periodontal disease, dental caries and fluorosis is statistically significant in relation to age groups. The authors present a very detailed methods section including a statement on how their data was analyzed. They conclude that the welfare hostel children were neglected by the dental community.

No. There are lots of studies on research of dental caries and dental fluorosis.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

Yes. They make an adequate review.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Yes. they present results in an objective manner

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    Yes

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Yes, data on methodology is very simple and enough to reproduce this trial.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

No. No more data can be obtained from this methodology.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

Yes. It should be taken in count by the Indian Health Authorities in order to improve dental health services. I reccomend to the authors to repeat this study in similar populations at five years intervals.

  • Other Comments:

It is a well done and interesting study. Results are good for dental health status and they must be published in a Indian journal an taken in count for including this results in the curriculum of the career od DDS in Indian universities.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

    The main claims are

    Among Welfare hostel children:

    1. Oral hygiene was slightly good amongst girls and dental caries rate was slightly high in boys.

    2. Moderate dental fluorosis observed

The conclusion made is that the Welfare hostel children were neglected by the dental fraternity. The claims are important as the study group forms the vulnerable section of the population

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Yes

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

The previous literature cited are related to school children who not residing the hostels. Since the living conditions vary exact comparison and thereafter interpretation cannot be made.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    Not applicable

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Yes

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Information about study participantssuch as living condition , oral hygiene practices, diet, source of water would add to the better understanding of the claims made by the authors

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

There are studies in the vulnerable population. Definitely such studies should act as eye openers for dental fratenity in that region to take up publis health initiatives in reducing the inequalities
