A Comprehensive Review of Influenza Virus
Posted by Dr. Venkataramana Kandi on 05 Dec 2012 03:46:06 PM GMT

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

An overlook on emergence of flu virus. Author has putforth the evolution of various pandemics of past. And this is very important if we have to think about predicting a posssible threat. An understanding of emergence of influenza virus, though is a difficult one. We have always attempted to study the pandemics, tried to predict and looked for a protective vaccine

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Apt

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    NA

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Yes

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

    NA

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

Yes. any reader can come to a clear understanding of flu virus

  • Other Comments:

Good article. As influenza virus has many serotypes based on the haemagglutinin(1-15) and Neuraminidase(N1-9), and that it has multiple host range (human, pig, fowl/birds, seals) and most have a close contact with human, the transmission chains remain open. The ability of virus to change antigen (ANTIGENIC DRIFT AND SHIFT) and most importantly the virus from different hosts can mix resulting in a different serotype that may be more pathogenic makes this virus a possible threat in producing a pandemic

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Avan flu is an important zoonotic disease of immense public health importance.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Yes

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Review is well justified.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Yes

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Some recent information and literature may improve and strengthen the content of the said review.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

The review has been well represented.
