  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

If correlation of Serum Ferritin Levels and Chronic Telogen Effluvium is established in a Tertiary Hospital, Mandya

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

As case study, it is good knowlege sharing not novel science.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    No

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

More case controlled data is required to make claim on correlation. More statistical analysis is needed with regression analysis.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

Results section is not enough to rule out deviation.

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Yes, for basic data analysis.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

More data and more case control study is needed(double in sample size) with a clear criteria of sample selection.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

    No

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Study claims the low serum hemoglobin and ferritin levesl can cause alopecia in females.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

Alopecia due to telogen effluvium can be caused by multiple factors, without ruling out all the factors, their claims cannot be novel. Relationship between hairloss and low ferritin and hairloss can be novel.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Yes. Their study group found to have low hb and ferritin levels.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    No

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Authors can include below details in methodology

    1. Why only female patients are involved in the study

    2. Factors such as effect of water and use of type of  shampoo or soap on these study group

    3. All the patients were selected from the tertiary care hospital. Do they came to hospital with some disease? As the stress associated with disease can cause hairloss

    4. How the ferritin levels are measured - kit used, method etc

    5. How they estimated hb concentration(Method, instrument)
    6. Do they rule out subclinical hypothyroidism by TSH?
    7. Do they have any nutritional disorders? Since iron deficiency may be associated deficiency of vitamins and minerals.

    8. Authors can include the statical package and version used for this study

    9. Title "correlation" may be changed as authors did not correlate any parameters by statictical methods(Pearson of spearmen). Only comparison was done between cases and controls

    10. In the methods " sex matched" can be deleted.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

1.In the results and also in the illustration 1  autours can include p value

2.Discussion need to be improved by adding more detalis about other causes of hair loss with rererencing the previous work.

    3. In the abstract avoid abbrevations

    4. in the abstarct remove referencing in the line 2

    5. References

    (i) Reference - 3 and 4- "Telogen ef?uvium" - correction is needed

(ii) Relook into reference 5- " in? uences on follicular cycle" -

    (iii) 7 - "iron de?ciency"  - remove?

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

No. As hairloss is multifactorial and authors have addressed only hb and ferritin levels.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The author want to establish a correlation between serum ferritin levels and chronic Telogen Effluvium in a Mandya Hospital. The establishment of the title needs good research work.and the author tried effectively. The author avoided to touch the the other etiological factors. As the concentration is purely on ferritin levels only,we need not ask them to work on all other causative factors of chronic Telogen Effluvium.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

A study of serum ferritin levels in this regard is a novel study certainly because no other relative studies were done on this recently.Often, this cause was neglected for the study. This title is also supported by other previous literature.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

The context of the previous literature are able to support the author's present research work and analysis. However some literature parts mentioned the other etiological causes and the connected parameters.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

The results are able to support the claims. For the present study, the enclosed data is able to hold the necessary validity

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

Authors  perfectly submitted their work, and no deviation occurs.

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

The methodology is satisfactory with enough details, experiments and the analytical methods.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

No other experiment or additional information are necessary here.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

This paper is a good research work, and useful to the bio-community and Dermatology.one can cite it.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Iron deficiency as determined by serum ferritin levels can be a cause of hair loss in females.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

Iron deficiency causing hair loss is not a novel concept, but the correlation of degree of hair loss with serum ferritin levels can be considered to be novel.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Yes, the results very well support the claims

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    No

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

There are no details regarding the method of estimation of serum ferritin levels. There are no expalnations for selecting only females for the study.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Discussion is insufficient, the basis of hair loss in iron deficiency has not been well explained.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

No the paper is not outstanding. It could have been been still better by including results of previous studies and by correlating the degree of hair loss with other factors like the degree of anemia or the ferritin levels. The diffenence in serum ferritin levels between the premenopausal and post menopausal females and the effect of age, duration, parity, menstrual bleeding, dietary habits or any other associated illness to find out the cause of iron deficiency in such subjects.
