  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    No

1)Awang H,Wong LP,Jani R,Low WY.Knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases and sexual behaviours among malaysian male youths.J Biosoc Sci 2013;Mar 12;1-11.only difference male population only studied while here both males and females covered.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Yes, well collected detailed data with proper statistical analysis, with samples collected from 3distinct regions of mumbai,.South, western suburbs and Central subarban region and from each college sample size was determined with confidence interval of 9 and confidence level of 95% and students from science, commerceand arts in equal number with proper distribution of both sexes.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    Yes

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

The references have not been cited properly with authors names incomplete without surnames -so very difficult to reproduce or countercheck them, should use either of the system for citing references, alphabetically or numberwise but namers should be properly cited eg gangulyet al or tan,pan et al is no way if citing references which should be completed.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

No, the facts are already known-onlky i portance by state authorities needs to be given to improve the health by proper utilization of NACO and RCH personnel to incorporate complete knowledge.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

Proper education techniques to make youth aware of  dangers of multiple sexual partners and importance of which measures are preventive to improve sexual health of our youth to build a healthy society.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Utilization of ICT's in mombay is very low with risk of failure of preventitive measures of STI's.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

No, the reports from ICT says the same and warn of that.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

Yes, at the end of the intoduction before methods.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Yes, perfectly, they support the claim.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

The protocol seems good and no deviation reported.

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Yes, methodology is valid and detailed.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Yes, detailed tables of the results would help. Also adding a copy of the questionier would help to imagine the protocol.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

The paper is excellent but not outstanding with loads of simillar papers in the deciplin.

  • Other Comments:

KAP Study for STI in Mumbai
Posted by Mr. Rahul Gala on 27 Mar 2013 02:36:41 PM GMT

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The paper claims that the HIV related publicity is affecting the STI knowledge in some way- either positively or negatively. The attidude and safe sex practices are explored on a comprehensive battery.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

Logically, the claims are just. HIV gets the highest funding from both the GoI and international avenues. However, other STIs have taken a back seat. The harmful consequences of Herpes, clamydia, etc. are not really drilled down to the masses-which may lead to a medical ice-berg.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

Previous literature in this area is lacking from Indian context. However, the claims are in accordance with the literature from other areas.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

The results clearly support the claim. Gender disaparity & stream-wise differences are incidental findings.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    NA

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Sample requires more detailed description. Methodology is good but concent forms should have been uploaded.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

    NA

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

This attempt is the first of its kind in Mumbai region. For this reason alone, the manuscript has a huge scope for further review.

  • Other Comments:

A good effort with analytical approach. Scientific methodology is sound.

Good Insight
Posted by Dr. Shreyas Joshi on 27 Mar 2013 10:47:22 AM GMT

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The main claim is that there exist disparity in KAP of adolescents within Mumbai. This disparity holds true even for HIV vs. other STIs.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

The claims are consistent with many other studies carried out in other regions. There is a lack of literature in this regard for Mumbai region.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

The claims are well placed, however, the literature review needed to be more robust.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

The results provided in tabular form represent the conclusions in a focused manner.

The sample size appears to be small for the scal of the population. However, a sample of 279 appears to be good enough. Whether this was a cluster or startified sampling within the streatms is not clear.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

It might be interesting to know whether sex education classes were given these students.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

The research appears to be first of its kind in Mumbai region. The findings are of great relevance for STI policies. Adolescents are one of the high risk risk group for HIV and STI, and the paper provides insight about their perceptions about the STIs. This paper should definitely be presented in seminars for critical review and also to derive the new research questions.
