Consumption of the dietary flavonoids and cancer
Posted by Prof. Meral Guzey on 04 Jul 2013 07:46:01 AM GMT

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

This study claims that flavonoids, such as quercetin, luteolin and kaempferol have curable effects on various cancer types. Further, the authors provide meta-analysis of epidemiological studies.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

There are several studies on flavonoids and cancer since mid-80. This study specifically focuses on quercetin, luteolin and kaempfenol, and it is novel.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

Yes, especially I was impressed that negative outcomes on bladder cancer by Garcia et al. 1999 was properly mentioned in the study. Prostate cancer might need little more detail.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Yes, my suggestion is that you need a list of food commadities, which includes quercetin, luteolin and kaempfenol and specific cancer types, which they are correlating. This will help to the reader to benefit more from the study.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    Yes

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Yes

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Please provide abbreviation, and food commadies-cancer tables. Please include further studies on PCA, i.e.

    This is a good article.

Yes. Most of the surgeons neglect nutritional support in cancer patients.Inclusion of bioflavanoids will improve outcomes

yes. Nicely written article. diet forms an important yet highly neglected aspect while treating any cancer. very few surgeons encourage proper nurtitional support for their cancer patient with diet fortified with micronutrients & other essential vitamins & minerals. nutrition plays a cricial role while treating any cancer patient. incorporation of such bioflavonoids will definitely help the cancer patient overall.

Flavonoids and Cancer: A meta-analysis Study
Posted by Prof. Valcinir Bedin on 30 May 2013 02:09:16 PM GMT

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The main claims are the relation between flavonoids and the risk of cancer and it is important because there are much inforamtion about this subject that must be clarified.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

The claims are not novel but the method (meta-analysis) is.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes they are properly placed.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    NA

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Yes. Thii method may have some critcs but it is well known that meta-analysis is very important to clarify some subjects.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

The paper may have antoher edition in a fwe years from now to improve the results.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

Yes. I think this paaper coulb be presented in any cancer meeting worldwide.
