Review on Obstructive Renal Failure Secondary to Cystocele
Posted by Dr. Richard Lee on 11 Sep 2014 04:24:05 AM GMT Reviewed by WMC Editors

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Case report of upper urinary tract obstruction and renal failure due to pelvic organ prolapse

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

No– obstruction due to pelvic organ prolapse has been previously been reported.  This patient likely had the majority of her renal function from a single renal unit that became obstructed with the bladder outlet obstruction.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    NA

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Yes

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Mesh use for treatment of prolapse is currently controversial.  Alternatives would have included pessary placement.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

    No–case report only

Obstructive uropathy secondary to cystocele
Posted by Prof. Kostis Gyftopoulos on 02 Aug 2014 03:18:45 PM GMT Reviewed by WMC Editors

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

This is a cse report of a cystocele induced obstructive uropathy on a solitary kidney. This entity is well known to both gynecologists and urologists and this is probably why there are few published cases or series of cases in the literature. The only different feature of thw case is that the patient had a solitary kidney which probably was responsible for the anuria and ARF presentation.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    NA

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

The report adequately presents the case. However several grammatical and syntax errors need to be addressed. Most importantly though, the authors should focus on what this report may offer as new information to clinicians that may deal with a similar case. In this aspect, nothing is new. The case was properly managed by the authors; however the same approach (ie physical- BUN tests- ultrasound- JJ stent placement) would be performed in any sound clinical setting. I don't believe this case report brings something novel in both diagnosis and treatment.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    NA

Moreover, the literature cited is presented in a completely inappropriate way. Plese refer to guidelines for authors in any reputable journal. It would be also useful to include some more recent reports such as:
