  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Dr. Acharya and his team reveal the oral health care needs of disabled children aged 12-15 years old residing in care centers in Nepal.  The paper displays the rate of caries and the various obstacles for the patients and providers of preventing as well as treating this population.  This is accomplished by a cross sectional study. Many of the issues with the disabled children are relevant regardless of their geographic location.  This topic includes the problems encountered and their remedies while treating the disabled in Nepal.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

The goal of this paper is exposing the rate of caries and discussing the needs and treatment of caring for a disabled pediatric patient in Nepal.  It is novel since it is a sound beginning to ignite further research in this area.  Also, it reviews the issues present in that area and within these care centers for that specific pediatric age range.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

Yes, the claims are properly placed in the context of the orevious literature.  The articles used as a resource for this paper were relevant and informing.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Yes, the results support the claims made by the authors.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

The protocol was followed by the guidelines of the study as they were prepared.

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Yes, the trial can be reproduced sicne a series of close ended questions were distributed ina survey.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Follow up studies can be performed to determine the causation of dental caries status by the independent variables involved in the study conducted by this team.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

This study is a good basis to extend into further research on this topic.

  • Other Comments:

The design was efficient and conducted to promote ease of participation.  As stated earlier, follow up studies can be performed to determine the causation of dental caries status by the independent variables involved in the study conducted by this team.   Overall, this study provides sufficient basis to conduct further more detailed projects into this topic and was well written.
