Professor Jinlian Hu was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, UK in 1994. She joined the Institute of Textiles and Clothing in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the same year and her main areas of research are textile structure and mechanics, cloth simulation, artificial intelligence techniques and shape memory materials and textiles. Prof. Hu is the first person in the world, who proposed the model to link shape memory polymers with textile performance and invented the world’s first cellulose-based shape memory fabric. Many patents have been registered in the US, China and other parts of the world from this significant work. She founded the Shape Memory Textiles Centre in 2003 and this center has been a driving force in the successful establishment of an extensive collaboration andpartnership network of academic organizations and industrial enterprises in the HKSAR, Mainland China, USA, Australia and other countries. There are about 15 PhD students and 13 postdoctoral fellows studied/studying under her supervisionin the Shape Memory Polymer and smart textiles areas alone. Her supported innovative researches have begun to bear fruits in recent years, involving a growing number of scientific publications and technological advances of shape memorymaterial synthesis and processing and extensive media coverage. Major efforts are underway to commercially develop these innovations for various shape memory products. Over the years, her research team have achieved international reputation for their insight in many emerging research areas. Numerous local and international companies have been interested in her research work and a number of TV programs from USA, Australia, China and Hong Kong have broadcasted her pioneer work in the shape memory polymer and textile areas. She was awarded the Silver award on the Shape Memory Fabrics and their preparation methods at the 38th World Eureka Invention Expo in 2004. In addition, she was the 1st person receiving the most prestigious First-Class Prize of Sang Ma Trust Fund Textile Science and Technology Award in 2006.
