Consultant Breast and General Surgeon
Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead
I am a fully trained surgeon, specializing in diseases of the breast, both benign and malignant. I completed my medical degree (MBBS) from Dow Medical College, University of Karachi, Pakistan in 1990.
I received surgical training as surgical house officer (SHO) in Barnsley District General Hospital. During this time I passed my FRCS exams. I worked nearly 3 years as a Specialist Registrar in the Sheffield Rotation. Later I moved to Newcastle Upon-Tyne and then entered higher surgical training programme again. During my rotation I enrolled myself for the certificate in ‘Clinical Education’ from University of Newcastle and received the certificate in 2007. I passed my ‘Intercollegiate FRCS’ exams in 2008. I was appointed as a ‘Consultant Surgeon’ in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead in May 2008. Before taking up the post, I gained experience as a breast oncoplastic fellow from University Hospital of Hartlepool & North Tees. I started as a Consultant surgeon with main interest in breast surgery in December 2008.
I perform full range of breast cancer surgery and have expanded the oncoplastic breast services by introducing new techniques like strattice based reconstruction, dermal flap based reconstruction, one stage latissimus dorsi reconstruction & free flap nipple grafting. I also perform bilateral breast reductions for massive sized breasts causing gravitational symptoms.
I have been actively involved in the coaching of trainees appearing for the intercollegiate exams and training in theatres and outpatients. I am an Educational Supervisor to CT1 and a clinical Supervisor to Foundation doctors F1. I am responsible for their day to day clinical performance and involved with their teaching and training. I have been involved in training the GP trainees, mentoring breast care nurses and junior colleagues too.
I am author of various publications and case reports as shown in my CV. I have several poster presentations as well.
I am also a reviewer for ‘The International Journal of Surgery’. This is a peer reviewed journal & I have reviewed manuscripts on:
I am member of the ‘Research & Development’ committee and attend monthly meetings in the hospital where research taking place in the trust are discussed.
