Brief Biography:
Josette qualified as a Physiotherapist in Malta in 1986 and has a Master's degree in Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy from the State University of New York at Buffalo (USA).Her PhD from Kings College, University of London investigated the Topographical, kinesiological and Psychological factors in patients with scoliosis. Josette has over 20 years experience of conducting research studies in spinal deformities and over 17 years experience of teaching Research Methods to nursing and allied health Professionals. She has published over 30 papers in leading journals such as spine, the Cochrane Library, physiotherapy, physical therapy, the Journal of bone and joint surgery and the International Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation. Josette has also presented over 50 papers relating to Scoliosis at both National and International Conferences. Together with colleagues at Teesside University she has successfully redeveloped the newly approved Doctorate in Health and Social Care programme. She is currently supervising 2 PhD students and 2 Professional Doctoral students and is the module leader for two of the Doctoral Modules currently being taught on the Doctoral Programme. She has recently been successful in obtaining research funding both internally (£5000) for research into scoliosis patients perceptions of medical information provided and externally from the British Scoliosis Research Foundation (BSRF) for £15,000 to evaluate the information needs of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients at the first point of diagnosis. Josette is a member of the Health Professions Council, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists, the British Scoliosis Society, the International Research society of Spinal deformities and the Society of Spinal and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT).She is also on the editorial board of the journal Scoliosis and the Internet journal of Rehabilitation and is a manuscript reviewer for a number of journals. She is also a reviewer for the National Institute for Health research, Health technology assessment programme as well as an abstract reviewer for the World confederation of physical Therapy conference.

I have been working within the research methods team for the last 11 years and I am responsible for teaching a wide range of Research Methods modules across a number of programmes and professional groups within the School of Health and Social care from BSc level to Doctoral level. In the first two years I taught mainly Occupational therapists and physiotherapists. Currently however I am module leader of the Dprof dissertation and the Dprof research Methods module as well as one large Nursing Dissertation module which spans different pathways and subject groups (pre reg and post-reg). I am also module leader of a AHP MSc research methods module. I have supervised numerous dissertations from Bsc to Dprof and PhD levels and sat on the ethics committee for 6 years and the PhD research degrees committee for 5 years. Just recently I have been part of the Dprof in Health and Social Care, redevelopment team, a programme which has just been re-approved.

In this permanent position, I was responsible for teaching a number of research courses (qualitative and quantitative methods) to both undergraduate and post-graduate physiotherapy and occupational therapy students. These have included teaching and team-teaching on the following: Research Skills I and 2, and Evidence Based Practice to physiotherapy students, Social Research Methods and Research methods and Project Preparation to Occupational Therapy students. I participated in the working group (with the physiotherapy team) for obtaining accreditation for a new entry-level Master`s programme at the University of Teesside. This was approved and validated by the Chartered society of Physiotherapy. I supervised both Bachelor`s as well as Master`s student`s on their research projects or theses.

I taught Orthopaedics 1 and 2, Research Methods and Senior seminar to Bachelor's level physical therapy students. Besides teaching, I also supervised research projects, advised students, attended committee, faculty and college wide meetings. I was actively involved with the physical therapy team in obtaining accreditation by CAPTE for their Bachelor`s level programme. I further actively participated in converting their Bachelor`s programme to a problem-based Master`s level degree programme.

1/96-8/96-Assistant Professor in Physical Therapy, Wheeling Jesuit University, Wheeling, WV. This was an entry level master's degree programme with a problem based curriculum. I was responsible for teaching electrotherapy, orthopaedics, pathokinesiology and research. I helped in the accreditation preparation of the curriculum and this was successfully approved by CAPTE. I also advised master's level students on their research projects and attended faculty, committee and college wide meetings.

I organised, directed and was co-directed a number of research projects related to the assessment of back shape in scoliosis. I was also responsible for the clinical assessment and consultation of numerous patients (about 30 per week) with spinal deformities and other back problems. I was also responsible for collecting and analysing data and I worked together with orthopaedic surgeons and other health care professionals. Published and presented numerous papers. Experience gained both in research and clinical skills.
