Brief Biography:
I had a master’s degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (2004-2005), thereafter I obtained a scholarship to pursue a PhD degree. The title of my thesis was “Evolution of siderophore receptors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa”.
Ghysels et al. 2004 identified an alternative receptor P. aeruginosa uses to assimilate iron bound to its siderophore (pyoverdine), and at the time of identification, a fragment of this alternative receptor gene called fpvB (562 bp) was amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction, (PCR). The aim of my thesis was to, using PCR to amplify about 2.5 kb size fragment of this gene (the fpvB gene is about 2.5 kb in the P. aeruginosa PAO1) in other clinical and environmental strains of P. aeruginosa. A collection of strains from the Woluwe River was used for this purpose (Pirnay et al. 2005) , I designed a series of external and internal primers to amplify and sequence this gene in these isolates and during the process of amplification , variant forms of the siderophore receptor genes were identified (Osayande J.O., 2010).
In the Queen Astrid Military Hospital, water samples from the NorthSea were collected by Pirnay Jean-Paul and Daniel De Vos and I was asked to analyze these samples for the presence of P. aeruginosa. From the experimental work carried out on these water samples, a probable P. aeruginosa strain was identified for the first time (at the time of my stay in the Laboratory) in the NorthSea in Belgium.
