Brief Biography:


Dr Aristotelis A. CHATZIIOANNOU ( for detailed cv see at http://www.eie.gr/nhrf/institutes/ibrb/cvs/cv-chatziioannou-en.pdf)

received a Diploma in Electrical & Computer Engineering and a Ph.D. in Metabolic Engineering and Medical Informatics from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) Greece in 1996 and 2005 respectively. He has worked actively in the past (1996-2004) as an engineer in the fields of industrial consulting and software engineering. From June 2004 up to August 2005 he was with Al. Fleming Biomedical Science Research Center as an expert in Bioinformatics. Since September of 2005 he is with the Institute of Biological Research & Biotechnology in the National Hellenic Research Foundation, where he holds the position of the Principal Investigator (elected Research Assistant Professor) of the group of Metabolic Engineering and Bioinformatics.

 He has designed and directed and co-developed GRISSOM, the first Grid-based platform at European level, for the analysis and interpretation of DNA microarray experiments. His scientific activities include metabolic engineering, genomics, biological ontologies, bioinformatics, computational biology, biomedical image processing. He has participated in several national and European funded research projects and currently is member of the E-lico consortium (www.e-lico.eu). Dr. Chatziioannou is a member of the IEEE Association, the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Hellenic Computer Society, the Hellenic Society of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and a founding member of the Hellenic Society of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.

He is reviewer of the scientific journals Metabolic Engineering, Bioinformatics, Molecular Informatics, IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine, IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and Computers in Biology and Medicine, BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Systems Biology, Journal of Biomedical Semantics and PLOS One. He is also associate Editor of the journal Frontiers in Systems Biology and has recently become Editorial Board member of the Open Access Journal of Information Technology and Software Engineering of the OMICS Publishing Group.

He was appointed associate Editor for the 33rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (IEEE EMBC 2011 )  to be held in Boston between August the 30th and September the 3rd 2011, responsible for the invited session entitled “Addressing Complexity in Biomedical Research: Data Processing and Mining for Large Biomedical Datasets”.

   From 2008 he participates in the Life Sciences Virtual Research community (national contact point) that fosters distributed computing activities in the field of biomedicine at a European layer. He has been Invited speaker, and Session Chairman in various National and International Conferences.
