Patrick TK Woo MSc, PhD

Patrick Woo has been a faculty member at the University of Guelph (UoG) since 1974 (Assistant Professor 1974; Associate Professor 1978; Professor 1984). He was elected Director (2002), Axelrod Institute of Ichthyology. The UoG Senate also elected him University Professor Emeritus (2005) and it was conferred at convocation by the Honourable L. Alexander, Chancellor. Prior to his academic appointment @ UoG he was Medical Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow and Ballard Fellow in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Immunology, UoG; FAO Andre Mayer Research Fellow @ EATRO (East African Trypanosomiasis Research Organization, Uganda) and @ SRI (Serengeti Research Institute, Tanzania); and IDRC Research Consultant and Visiting Scientist @ NITR (Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research, Nigeria).
His other external appointments (1985-2010) include as NUS Visiting Research Professor @ National University of Singapore; CNPq Visiting Scholar @ Universidade Federal do Rio de Janerio, Brazil; MEC Research Scholar @  Instituto de Acuicultura de Torre de la Sal, Spain; Principal Investigator, AquaNet - Networks of Centers of Excellence, Canada; Short-term Visiting Professor @ 4 Universities; and Visiting Scientist @ 6 Institutes and Universities. He was External Assessor/Examiner of 3 Academic and Research Programs; External Assessor on Academic Appointments, Tenure and Promotion @ 12 Universities; and External PhD Examiner of 17 theses.
Patrick was Plenary speaker @ 14 conferences; Symposium Speaker @ 29 meetings; and presented >45 seminars at Universities/Institutes.  He received The Robert AWardle Award for contributions to Parasitology; elected Treasurer, Canadian Society Zoologists; founding Treasurer and Trustee, Zoological Education Trust; elected Fellow, The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene; elected Member, The New York Academy of Sciences; appointed Research Panel Member, The Science Advisory Board; Research Board Advisor, American Biographical Institute; and International Advisory Board Member, International Congress of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine.
Dr. Woo is editor-in-chief, The Open Parasitology Journal; editor, fish disease books; editor, Journal of Aquaculture Research and Development, and Current and Emerging Diseases/Disorders of Fish in Aquaculture (JARD special issue), and membership on 3 editorial boards; and expert reviewer (fish disease), Wikivet, Royal Veterinary College, UK.
He has published 193 refereed papers in journals; 19 reviews in conference proceedings; 15 book chapters; 53 abstracts (papers presented at conferences); & 8 books (publisher: CABI, UK) – books include Fish Parasites: Pathobiology and Protection (2012); Fish Diseases and Disorders, Volume 3: Viral, Bacterial and Fungal Infections 2nd edition (2011); Fish Diseases and Disorders, Volume 2: Non-infectious Disorders 2nd edition (2010); Fish Diseases and Disorders, Volume 1: Protozoan and Metazoan Infections 2nd edition (2006); and Diseases and Disorders of Finfish in Cage Culture (2002).
