Prof. Michele Olson

Brief Biography:


I am a professor of Exercise Physiology and the Research Director of the Human Performance Laboratory at Auburn University Montgomery in Montgomery, Alabama - USA. I received a Bachelor's or Arts graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1986.  In 1987 I received a Master's Degree in Health and Human Perfomance graduating Phi Kappa Phi in 1987.  I receved my PhD in Exercise Physiology in 1991 from Auburn University and took an assistant professor position at Huntingdon College where I received tenure in 1995. In 1996 I took a position at Auburn University Montgomery and became a full professor in 1999.  I have published approximately 75 papers in peer-reviewed journals and have contributed to well over 100 published abstracts and/or proceedings and have been a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine for outstanding service to research since 1998. I am also on the Editorial Board for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Health and Fitness Journal.

 

Academic positions:


-Professor of Exercise Physiology in the Department of Physical Education and Exercise Science at Auburn University Montgomery since 1996.

-Former Associate Professor in the Department of Human Performance and Kinesiology at Huntingdon College from 1990-1996.

 

Research interests:


-Cardiorespiratory responses to exercise and physical activity.

-Muscular activity (eletromyography) of the trunk during various forms of physical activity including Pilates and Yoga.

-Injury rates and patterns of women engaged in weight-bearing activities including running, step exercise, and aerobic exercise.

-The Female Athlete Triad; more specifically body image among active women and female athletes including co-horts of African American and White athletes.

-Heart Rate Variability (autonomic control of heartrate).

I am a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)

Hold the Title of Distinguished Research Professor at Auburn Montgomery.

Have twice received the College's Outstanding Research Professor Award.

Am an member of Omicron Delta Kappa.

Hold the title of "Oustanding Auburn Montgomery Alumni Professorship."

Editorial Board for the "ACSM Health and Fitness Journal."
