Dr. Jason Gardner

Assistant Professor
Physiology, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center
1901 Perdido St, MEB 7205

Brief Biography:

Jason Gardner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Dr. Gardner has a doctorate from Louisiana Tech University in the field of Biomedical Engineering. His postgraduate training is in cardiac physiology, and he has studied the pathophysiology of heart failure for more than 12 years. His primary focus is the role of the ventricular collagenous matrix in the advancement of progressive cardiac disorders. With over 25 publications in the field, Dr. Gardner has presented his work at Regional, National and International meetings, including meeting in the countries of Australia, Japan, and England. Dr. Gardner has chaired multiple sessions at Experimental Biology for the Cardiovascular Section of the American Physiological Society (APS). He is also an active participant in the K-12 Outreach Programs offered by the APS, which includes Science Fair Awards and hands-on workshops on physiological concepts. Dr. Gardner is on the editorial board of Endocrine and Life Sciences, and reviews for many highly ranked journals. Research in his laboratory is supported by the NIH and American Heart Association, as well as the Louisiana Board of Regents. Dr. Gardner and his wife, Hope, have two children. In his spare time, Dr. Gardner enjoys various outdoor activities, including golf, cycling, jogging, geocaching, and fishing.

Research interests:

My major research focus is the pathogenesis of heart failure. Of particular interest are the mechanisms responsible for adverse cardiac extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling associated with the progression of congestive heart failure. Current topics of study include: 1) the role of lysyl oxidase, a collagen crosslinking enzyme, and related peptides in myocardial ECM remodeling, 2) the cardioprotective effects of estrogenic pathways, including soybean- and plant-derived compounds, and 3) the cardiac effects of inhaled particulate matter and cigarette smoke. My laboratory utilizes rodent models of cardiac disease, including models of pressure and volume overload. We also use primary adult cell culture to examine specific pathways involved in the remodeling process.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:

Interesting concept that will hopefully assist in the dissemenation of experimental data and results.
