Dr. Charles Hesdorffer

Professor of Medicine
VA Medical Center of DC
50 Irving ST, NW - Hematology 151G

Brief Biography:

Extensive experience in Hematology and Oncology. Originally trained in Johannesburg, South Africa at the University of the Witwatersrand under TH Bothwell who together with Clement Finch in Seattle pioneered iron metabolism in the mid to later part of the 20th century. I subsequently underwent a Fellowship in Hematology and Oncology working with Arthur Bank in the areas of gene therapy for hemaglobinopathies after which I ran the bone marrow and stem cell program at Columbia for more than 19 years prior to my move to Hopkins and now latterly to the NIA to pursue interests in inflammation, immuno-senescence, aging and cancer. My publications of over 80 articles over the past 25 years have ranged around benign and malignant hematological and other malignancies with a major emphasis on the immunology of cancer, its potential use as a treatment modality, as well as the role the immune system plays in allowing a malignancy to develop versus its control. Most notably in this regard, these papers demonstrate my ability both to enroll patients on clinical trials as well as indicating my extensive collaborative efforts over the years together with the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research as well as with various departments in the Columbia/Cornell medical systems including neurology, neurosurgery and most surgical groups.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:

Excellent idea to bring innovative work to the scientific community as early as possible in order to foster collaborations and growth. I beleive that collaborative efforts in sceince have become much rarer than they shoudl be and this forum may be a way of bringing like-minded scientists together in order to hasten the development of novel ideas and therapies.
