Neurophysiology of kiss

I thank Dr Russell Searight for reviewing the article on neurophysiology of kiss but I have some concerns on some of his comments.

  1. Despite claiming some familiarity with the literature, he has not seen this issue addressed. This could imply scarcity of literature OR the claims in the article could be novel.
  2. I have clearly stated in my article that several claims remain unsupported with evidence due to scarcity of literature; hence, detailed review of related literature could not be presented. This has led Dr Russell to place the article at hypothesis level. The nature of the issue warrants a well-designed and thoughtful prospective study, which could be a tricky matter.

Comment on neurophysiology of kiss

In a recently published book entitled “The Science of Kissing: What Our Lips are Telling Us”, the author Sheril Kirshenbaum also mentions the release of same hormones (dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin) and for similar purposes as have been claimed in the article (1).                     

There is also suggestion in the book that kissing involves subconscious perception of the genetic and immune status (in male) and reproductive status (in female) and that women are most attracted to men with very different genetic and immune code than their own so that potential children are born with higher degree of genetic diversity that ensures healthier and enhanced suitability for survival.

For women who put a lot of weight into kissing, it acts as a nature’s litmus test to explore potential in a future partner.

Further, the saliva exchange during kissing is supposed to cause transfer of testosterone to the female to increase her libido and the estrogen in her saliva is sensed to assess her fertility status, the purpose being ground-preparation for mating and reproduction as has been emphasized in the original article (1).
