Ginkgo Biloba in Dementia
Posted by Dr. Marios Kyriazis on 07 Dec 2012 12:09:58 PM GMT

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The article discusses the use of plant extracts such as ginko biloba and its derivatives in the treatment of dementia, particularly in the under 50 years old. It emphasisis the use of ingredients other than phlavoonoids and terpenoids.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Yes

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    Yes

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Yes

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

    See below

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

The approach that considers the role of metals in dementia is not novel, but the potential benefits of gingko biloba in this respect ares interesting

  • Other Comments:

It would be useful if this was followed by a clinic trial showing the benefits of the treatment, and slo suggest more practical ways of how to use the treatment, beyond the use of normal over-the-counter ginkgo biloba extracts.

  • Other Comments:

I found it very informative, You can add  more regarding "targeted drug delivery using Plant made CCS" because most of issues regarding plant drugs is drug delivery especially in their formulation because drug stablity is an issue. You can also give insights to future experimental methods like how to express or seperate properly  folded  recombinant therapeutic proteins from that of misfolded one because there are millions of compounds or proteins that can be explored but  to extract that particular compound  or protein is even more challenging and expensive say for a large scale production.
