Antiarthritic Activity of Acetone Extract of Terminalia Chebula
Posted by Mr. David Blanford on 14 Dec 2014 10:17:53 PM GMT Reviewed by Interested Peers

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The extract of Terminalia chebula described in the paper provides anti-arthritic properties.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    No

Anti-arthritic and disease modifying activity of Terminalia chebula Retz. in experimental models. Nair V, Singh S, Gupta YK

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

The previous article is not mentioned

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

The results appear to support the claim.  However, the information presented on the effectiveness is somewhat limited.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    N/A

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

The sample size of 28 rats is quite small to draw significant conclusion from.  In additon, the data was not as well presented as possible and detail was lacking.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

A larger sample size would help reinforce the claims.  Additionally, more detail about the data collected would reinforce the claims.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

I do not consider this paper to be outstanding in the field.

  • Other Comments:

The results presented in the tables included would have been good to integrate into the body of the paper as resluts. Quantifying the effects on pad thickness change within the body of the paper would have been a good addition.

The possibility of differences in efficacy between sexes of rats is a cause of concern that was not evaluated in the paper.

Comments on Terminalia Chebula as a treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Posted by Ms. Tyler Bucci on 22 Nov 2014 09:34:50 PM GMT Reviewed by Interested Peers

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

the main claims are that terminalia chebula extract shows promising results as an antiarthritic agent.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    yes

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Not sure completely.  The results stated were limited within the paper, and some of the results in the tables were not clear. A written explanation would have been helpful.

The methodology is valid.  Only concern was whether 28 rats was a suitable sample size of subjects for this study.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Even though you provided the tables of your results, I think that they should have been explained in a results section of your paper.  It would also be helpful to write out the comparing results of terminalia chebula to other medications like Indomethacin.

It may also be a good idea to possibly expand more on what rheumatoid arthritis is.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

I think this topic is very interesting but have concerns on how substantial the results really are since they were not well explained within the paper.

  • Other Comments:

A paragraph on why patients should use terminalia chebula extract versus NSAIDS, anti-inflammatory agents, etc. would have been a nice way to summarize the results received in the study.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

That the acetone axtract of Terminalia chebula possesses anti-arthritic properties.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    The claim is not novel.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    NA

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Although similar and better described work has been done on this plant, the only difference here is the choice of the solvent, it is difficult to say that the results support the claims, as the experimental part is poorly written.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    NA

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

No, the paper does not offer enough details and it is sometimes confusing.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

    NA

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

It is not outstanding in any way.

  • Other Comments:

The abstract section is not properly written. For example the authors stated that indomethacin was used, yet in the result part of the abstract, dexamethaxone was also mentioned. The introduction section needs a major revisionMany references are missing in the introduction section. Likewise, the authors mentioned 'increase antibiotic resistance', which does not apply in this case. Why did the authors choose acetone to make the plant extract? What was the objective of the work? Is there any folkloric claim that the plant is used in the treatment of rheumatism? Did the local people use acetone to make the extract? The extract preparation is not clear and is poorly written. Is the method used a novel one or previously described? Proper references are needed in this wise. If acetone was used as the solvent, in what solvent was the extract dissolved: distilled water?. The athritis scoring was refered to in the athritis scoring, but it was not described any where.

  • Other Comments:

In this study the authors used Acetone Extract of Terminalia chebula fruits, which is a novel one and shown that it had a better effect on controlling CFA induced arthritis. Authors also reported its immunomodulatory role.

The results of the present study  Terminalia chebula found to be effective in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and this attested that it follows the data as per the traditional use as medicines.
