Critique of Euthanasia by Mr. Mohamed Najimudeen
Posted by Anonymous Reviewer on 11 Feb 2013 02:02:09 AM GMT

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The paper claims to delineate the various methods of euthenasia and to define the stands that various religions take.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

Not novel. This is a review

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    There are no results

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    Not applicable

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Not applicable

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

The paper would be strenghthened by the addition of examples

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

No. This is a very simple review of the various methods for euthenasia

  • Other Comments:

The paper is written in English but the grammar needs some work. This paper really has little to say over and above what common sense would dictate. There is a short discussion regarding the attitudes and practices of the world's 4 major religions. The author concludes that it can help relieve suffering in hopeless situations but the it could be abused by relatives with vested interests. There are no statistics, no review of the literature, no discussion of the legal, social and psychological aspects of euthanasia.  There is more to be learned about euthanasia, its definitions, history. practice, legal issues and role in veterinary medicine by looking it up on the web and in Wkipedia.  The article -- opinion piece -- could serve as a quick reference guide to healthcare workers who may be facing a problem.

Letter to the Editor on Euthanasia

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The article is very superficial and does not do justice to the important topic.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Nothing new or novel.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    No

    NA

This is a very superficial article with very little discussion and lacks in-depth treatment of the subject. I would have been happy if the author had touched upon a few aspects in detail and also talked about its history, legal status. Or if it were to be only the author's opinion article, then he should have explained his perspective in detail with a case made out to clear his position in a convincing manner. In its present form, the article is merely just a quick and short mix of few facts, eliious perspective and author's opinion in the end. As of now, this article, in my opinion, does not add much to the available literature. Why and Why not has not been discussed in depth. This could have been better put forth than just a sentence or two. That would have been meaningful and important contribution.

  • Other Comments:

The author has tried to write a very short article on a very important and sensitive issue. After defining and describing various types of euthanasia, he has also tried to give us the religious perspetive of a few main religions and then quickly concluded with his suggestion. There are a few typographic or formatting errors which can be edited to make this article better presentable. Similarly, some language editing and grammatical correction is needed in a few sentences.

Not really... But I realise that the author is a faculty at the Malaysia campus of our University and in a sister institution, though I do not know him personally.
