This is an important and timely clinical study examining the negative correlations in uric acid and ascorbate levels in pregnancy with preeclampsia and diabetes which provides a model for future studies in this area. The paper would be enhanced by including discussion of recent related studies:

    1. Wolak et al (2010) High uric acid level during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy is associated with higher risk for gestational diabetes mellitus and mild preeclampsia. Hypertens Pregnancy PMID20822424

    2. Martin & Brown (2010) Could uric acid have a pathogenic role in pre-eclampsia. Nature Revs Nephrology 6:744-748.
