Brief Biography:


Professor Göbel gained his doctorate in medicine in 1986 after completing his studies at the Universities of Munich, Würzburg and Bridgetown. He also studied psychology and, after graduating, gained additional qualifications in psychiatry, at the University of Ulm, and neurology at the University of Kiel, becoming a specialist in neurology and pain therapy. He became the Head of the neurological outpatient clinic and headache clinic of the Department of Neurology at the University of Kiel in 1991. He has been Director of the Clinical Pain Research Group and of the Kiel Pain and Headache Centre since 1998.

Professor Göbel´s areas of scientific interest are research into and clinical investigation of pain and headaches, the measurement of pain, myofacial mechanisms of pain and the epidemiology and classification of neurological diseases. Mechanisms involved in therapeutic interventions in the neurological diseases, clinical neurophysiology and neuropsychology are also subjects of particular interest. These interests are reflected in his contributions to textbooks on the mechanisms, diagnosis, classification and therapy of headaches and in other publications in peer-reviewed journals. Experience in clinical studies last for more than 20 years.

Among Professor Göbel´s scientific awards are German Award for Pain Research and Pain Therapy, the Jannsen European Headache Award, the Rudolf Frey Award, the R.F. Weiss Award and the FTD-Award.
