Dr. Maria Friedrichsen

Brief Biography:

My PhD- thesis from 2002 concerned advanced cancer patients, family members and physicians experience of information when tumour-specific treatment was discontinued, in the transition to a late palliative state.

I am currently holding a position as an associate professor at Linköping University, Faculty of Health Sciences at Campus Norrköping, and at Palliative Education and Research Centre in the County of Östergötland, Sweden. In 2003 I received “The fifth annual Milly Haagedoorne lecture” by EACE- European Association for Cancer Education. I’m also an invited scientific expert for the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) that is a government agency in Sweden under the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. My research area is palliative care in different contexts, where I have used qualitative methods of different kind. My specific interest is communication between patients, family members and different kind of health professionals in palliative care as well as existential aspects of death and dying and symptom management.
