Brief Biography:


Gary Small, MD, is Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and Parlow-Solomon Professor on Aging at
the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is also Director of the Imaging and Biomarkers Core of the UCLA Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Director, as well as Director of the UCLA Longevity Center and the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from UCLA, Dr. Small earned a medical degree at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. He completed a residency in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and a clinical fellowship at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Dr. Small then completed a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at UCLA. 

Dr. Small's team has developed brain imaging technologies that have improved the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and
have led to expanded Medicare coverage for brain PET scanning.  In addition to testing medicines designed to treat or delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease, as Director of the UCLA Longevity Center, Dr. Small has studied and developed healthy aging lifestyle and memory training programs that are available throughout the U.S. in senior centers, community hospitals, and assisted living facilities.  Thanks to his team of dedicated doctors and scientists, these programs are now considered evidence-based interventions by the Department of Aging.  Dr. Small
lectures throughout the world and frequently appears on The Today Show, Good Morning America, PBS, and CNN. Dr. Small has authored over 500 scientific works and received numerous awards and honors, including the Jack Weinberg Award for Excellence
in Geriatric Psychiatry from the American Psychiatric Association.  Scientific American magazine named him one of the world’s top innovators in science and technology.  His popular books
include The New York Times bestseller, The Memory Bible and his forthcoming book, to be released in January 2012, The Alzheimer’s Prevention Program.
