Brief Biography:

Herbal Medicines are plant based formulations that are used to alleviate the diseases. These are also known as botanical medicines or phytomedicines. Lately, phytotherapy has been introduced as more accurate synonym of herbal or botanical medicine. Recently treatment of diseases with herbal medicine has been addressed as phytopharmacotherapy and herbal medicinal products have been included in dietary supplements. The WHO is engaged to establish definitive guidelines for methodology of clinical research and the appraisal of effectiveness of traditional medicines. Many of the major pharmaceutical corporations have renewed their strategies in favour of natural products drug discovery and it is important to follow systems of biological applications to facilitate the process. Fulminate hepatic failure, caused by a number of etiologies, produces considerable morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Since liver plays a central role in detoxification and excretion of many endogenous and exogenous compounds, hence, any injury to it or impairment with its functions will have implications on health of the affected person. Natural products have great potential as emerging hepatoprotective agents, Polygonum bistorta and active principles which are known for their anti oxidative and free radical scavenging properties. The purpose of this investigation was to explore hepatoprotective efficacy of Plant extract and its active principle against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and acetaminophen (APAP) induced liver damage. Hepatoprotective efficacy of Polygonum bistorta and active principles was evaluated against acute and sub chronic exposure to the toxicants for 48 h and 8 weeks respectively using several biochemical parameters like hemoglobin, blood sugar serum transaminases, lactate dehydrogenase, urea, creatinine, bilirubin, albumin, triglyceride, cholesterol, GGT and BSP retention in blood. Total protein, glycogen, acid and alkaline phosphatase, ATPase, G-6-Pase, succinic dehydrogenase, triglyceride, cholesterol, LPO, GSH, glutathione cycle (GR, GPx, G6PD, GST), SOD and Catalase activity were studied in both liver and kidney in addition to hepatic P450 Drug Metabolizing Enzymes and Hexobarbitone induced sleep time. Disturbances in cell cycle were also observed using flow cytometric technique. These findings were also supported by optical and electron microscopic (TEM/SEM) studies. Treatments with Plant extract and acytive principle at doses of 100 mg/kg and 25 mg/kg (po) were found to be most effective. Presence of plant extract act as strong antioxidant, thus preserving the integrity of liver cell membrane, however, further investigations are required as to develop it as a drug of choice.
