Prof. Ryszard Pluta

Surgical Neurology Branch
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke
5512 Pembroke Terrace

Brief Biography:

As a 21-year veteran of the Surgical Neurology Branch of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes and coming out of an editorial fellowship at JAMA, I am eager to continue my life’s work to advance neuroscience as an editor for WebMedCentral. Participating in the editorial processing last two years, as JAMA’s Fishbein fellow has been an interesting contrast to my work as a neurosurgeon and clinical scientist by showing me the other side of scientific publishing. During the fellowship, I have sheparded research manuscripts through the peer review process from submission to publication, wrote news articles, and edited manuscripts. I have extensive clinical, experimental, academic, and educational experience that includes developing and conducting experimental and clinical trials; educating medical professionals in the United States and abroad; writing protocols, journal articles and reviews; and serving on the editorial boards of several national and international medical journals. My work has been recognized nationally and internationally. I was awarded a Doctor Habilitatus in Medicine by the Polish Academy of Sciences. I received several special service recognition awards by the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as research awards by the American Heart Association, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. I share an international patent for the use of sodium nitrite in the treatment of neurovascular diseases. In July of 2010, I was awarded a Morris Fishbein Fellowship in Medical Editing and joined the editorial staff of JAMA, the leading medical journal. I strongly believe that with my medical knowledge, clinical and research experience, and currently acquired medical editor skills, I will be able to contribute successfully to the mission and goals of WebMedCentral. Sincerely yours, Ryszard Pluta, M.D., Ph.D.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:

It is an exciting idea that through a coordinated effort may lead to a development of the single international platform for preparation, review, and publishing medical research papers. Such an unification of many journal-based standards should increase reliability and power of presented data, assure a high quality of research, and facilitate unrooting of scientific fraud. An immediate access via Internet to the latest discoveries may also help to speed up the exchange of information and dramatically widen the audience. Thus, the medical news, comments, educational editorials should often accompany research papers. Furthermore, the Editorial Board should actively encourage submission of high quality "negative" studies, which should increase a power of this platform as well as contribute to lowering the costs of research through the world.
