Dr. Nourtan Abdeltawab

Postdoctoral fellow
Molecular Genetics, University of Cincinnati

Brief Biography:

I have performed my PhD studies in Dr. Malak Kotb laboratory employing systems biology approach and successfully identified host interactive pathways modulating the severity of group A streptococcal (GAS) sepsis. I narrowed down and validated candidate genes within the mapped quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and parsed them into network of pathways involved in modulating severity of GAS sepsis and its outcomes. I lead studies to further dissect cellular mechanism underlying differential susceptibility to severe GAS sepsis. Moreover, I have been closely involved in the design, implementation and analysis of several successful collaborative genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to map QTLs associated with differential response to a number of infectious diseases including candidiasis, pneumonia, ectromelia & vaccinia viruses and shiga toxin. Our aim is to identify common pathogenic mechanisms and host defense strategies that may be modulated using similar strategies. In addition, because of the group focus on translational research, I have successfully completed two high-throughput studies of genome-wide transcriptional profiling projects, mouse spleen across common inbred strains and BXD strains and CEPH panel (Centre d"Etude du Polymorphisme Humain), a human genome diversity cell line panel, both completed projects were deposited in WebQTL online platform. This work was done with the aim of comparing pathways and expression in mice and man to maximize translational research between these species.

Research interests:

My research interests include use of systems biology approach to answer questions of differential host response to complex diseases including infectious diseases. I am also interested in epigenetic modulation of diseases.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:
