computer related Musculoskeletal problems in health care workers

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

It common and emerging problem among general as well as health care professionals.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

MSD is the broad term and related not only to the use of computers but also the reading and studying style. this criteria needs to be more refined ashould have specific objectivity.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

Observations are very general and does not make specific inference.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

It is true that computer related musculoskeletal problem are increase and need to have sensitization and ergonomic better design equipment and healthy habits to tackle these problems.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

It is a cross sectional observational study no comparision can be drawn out if it and also it does not have specific crieteria to refine and separate from the other causes of the musculoskeletal problems in health care workers.

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Methodology needs to be properly defined.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Type of work age and specific work needs to be defined

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

No but it can senitize people to these problems

Study can  be improved by having specific type of problems separating the other common condition

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The first of its kind study on MSD’s associated with computer usage among 215 health care college students in north India found prevalence at 55.81% with significant female predominance. Study is on health care students but it fails to take into consideration whether cause of MSD is work of  health care persons or computer.Secondly it fails to subclassify MSD. Biomechanics of stress injuries in relation to computer work is not highlighted.Discuusion is not well written.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Sample population is a mixed  one. It is very difficult to say if MSD is due to professional work or computer work. Population has to be precise which is exclusively exposed to computer work.MSD need to be subclassified into different types.

Proper sample size collection , Subcategorisation of MSD, Discussion needs to be rewritten in detail.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The first of its kind study on MSD’s associated with computer usage among 215 health care college students in north India found prevalence at 55.81% with significant female predominance.

Though important, I do not agree with the above statement.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

In this study the subjects included i.e. the medical, dental, nursing and physiotherapy students have different schedules, timings, postural variations and activity levels. For example a dental student would have to flex his/her spine more than the others while observing a dental procedure/surgery being carried out. Similarly the nursing student would have to stress the spine more than others while shifting patients etc. So in my view the MSD s would also be because of work related stress in addition to computer usage.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

In CMC Ludhiana people from all over the country come to pursue their careers. Since India is a vast country there would definitely be a difference of symptoms, severity and tolerance between people of different regions i.e. North vs South India.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

The male vs female ratio of subjects included in this study is    2: 1, that is why it apparently appears that more female subjects suffer from MSD. So the expression “significant female predominance “ is incorrect.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    NA

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

This study would have been more authentic if it was carried out by including subjects from same part of the country, subjects with same work and training schedule (for example students from medical college only) and equal number of males and female subjects.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

    Yes. As mentioned above.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

No. This study is not an outstanding study. There are a lot of lacunae.
