Prof. Alejandro Frangi

Professor of Biomedical Image Computing
University of Sheffield

United Kingdom

Biography:

I have obtained my undergraduate degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia (Barcelona) in 1996. I have subsequently carried out research on electrical impedance tomography for image reconstruction and noise characterization at the same institution. In 1997 I have pursued my PhD at the Image Sciences Institute of the University Medical Center Utrecht on model-based cardiovascular image analysis. During this period I am the visiting researcher at the Imperial College in London, UK, and in Philips Medical Systems BV, The Netherlands. I am a Full-Professor at the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK and Associate Professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain. I am currently leading the Center for Computational Imaging & Simulation Technologies in Biomedicine (www.cistib.org) at the University of Sheffield with associated members at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. My main research interests are in computer vision and medical image analysis with particular emphasis in model- and registration-based techniques, and statistical modeling methods. I have also engaged in image-based computational physiology modeling, viz. computational fluid hemodynamics, cardiac electromechanics and image-based tissue characterisation. I have edited a book, published 5 editorial articles and over 95 journal papers in key international journals of my research field and more than 130 book chapters and international conference papers. I have been the Guest Editor of special issues of IEEE Trans on Medical Imaging, IEEE Trans on Biomed Engineering and Medical Image Analysis journals. I am a Senior Member of IEEE and Associate Editor of IEEE Trans on Medical Imaging, Medical Image Analysis and the Int’l Journal for Computational Vision and Biomechanics journals. I am a recipient of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Early Career Award (2006) and the ICREA-Academia Prize (2009).

Academic positions:

Experience 1. October 2011 – Present: Professor; University of Sheffield 2. May 2007 – September 2012: Associate Professor; Universitat Pompeu Fabra

Research interests:

I have been the scientific coordinator of over 15 national and European projects, both funded by public and private bodies. I was the coordinator of the @neurIST (www.aneurist.org) European Integrated Project and scientific coordinator in the Spanish CENIT Technology Platform CDTEAM (www.cdteam.org) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry and CDTI. My lab is also member of the Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine Center for Networked Biomedical Research (www.CIBER-BBN.org).
