Prof. Henry Sostman

Brief Biography:


Dr. H. Dirk Sostman is Executive Vice President of The Methodist Hospital, and serves as Chief Academic Officer of the Hospital, Chief Medical Officer of the Methodist System and President and Chief Executive Officer of TMH Physician Organization.

Dr. Sostman has been an active clinician, researcher and administrator. He was an active clinician in thoracic and cardiovascular imaging for over 20 years. He has been named regularly to regional and national lists of best doctors. As a researcher, he emphasized translational research in new technologies such as noninvasive angiography and metabolic imaging. His recent research has focused on clinical trials in venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; he guided and participated in most of the major national and international research in this area. He has had numerous NIH and foundation grants and authored over 200 original publications. He has lectured extensively nationally and internationally. As an administrator, he supervised a large clinical department, residency and fellowship programs, and concurrently guided medical center-wide clinical programs, working closely with department chairs, hospital and medical college leadership. He conceived and developed the clinical phase of Weill Cornell's overall strategic plan, and served on the oversight groups that raised $750 million and guided implementation of the programs that led to recruitment of over 50 new faculty, development of new clinical services and a new outpatient care building, which was the first new Cornell building in New York City in 50 years.

His is a Founding Member of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and Society of Thoracic Radiology. Awards and honors include New York’s Best Doctors, Best Doctors in America, America’s Top Doctors, Stauffer Award, George Simon Memorial Award, Lamport Biomedical Research Award, Dolgan Memorial Award and Fales Prize. Scientific Advisory Panels have included the RNM Study Section of the NIH, the DMG Special Emphasis Panel (Chair) of the NIH, and the NIH Commission, Academy of Radiology Research. He has served as President of the Association of University Radiologists, Councilor of the American College of Radiology and as a member of the New York State Board for Medicine.

 

Academic positions:


He received the M.D. degree in 1976 from Yale University School of Medicine, followed by graduate training in medical imaging at Yale - New Haven Hospital. He was a faculty member at Yale until 1987. He was at Duke University as Professor and Vice Chair of Radiology, until 1995. In1995 he was appointed Professor, Chair and Radiologist-in-Chief at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Sostman also served as Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs (2001-2005), Executive Vice Dean (2003-2005) at Weill Cornell, President of the New York - Presbyterian Hospital Medical Board (2004-2005) and as a Trustee of New York - Presbyterian Hospital (2003-2005).
