  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

This paper is just a report of the way medical students are assessed in Nepal and Caribean schools. What was reported is not something new but the authors just tried to compare Nepal that uses MEQs and SEQs AND Caribean that uses MCQs. The importance of the report is much less but just an information.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

No I dont think so becaause the authors have not done or reported something new to the literature. The means of assessing is their students is what has been in practice for quite along time including African medical schools and in some part of Europe.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

Just a report, so no much literature cited.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

No figures were reported to show how the students have been performing all this while in those regions with comparing and contrasting. The authors should provide results of passing or failing amongst students at different levels and in each region to showcase pros and cons in the methods of assessments they are practicing and whether to switch over to other methods of assessing students elsewhere.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    NA

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

The method they used in assessing their students is still valid but enough detail was not provided on how they conduct their practicals, especially in Anatomy whether they still use cadavers or plastic models or internet based practicals.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Yes, the authors need to add more information especially on how the students perform in Caribean methods of assessment of using mainly MCQs and how those students differ from the students in Nepal. Also communiny based learning, how good are students in that? Authors should give figures on the student performance who are assessed on community medicine and those in Caribean who are not assessed on that.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

I dont think so, but at least it provided readers with information

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The main claim of this paper was to compare the way the medical students are evaluated by their teahcers in two different countries. It is very important to all linked to teaching medicine because you can learn a lot from theri experience.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

Yes. I have never read this kind of comparison made between these two regions.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes they are

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

As a comparative study the results supported the claims.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    N.A.

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Yes, the paper clearly show how the assessment is made in both centres and made the pros and cons of each one.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

I believe that they can improve the paper showing us how is it in the rest of the medical course.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

Yes. its is very important to all related to medical teaching in any part of the world and I will use it in my next lecture.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

In this paper, Authors discuss their opinion about the two important assessment systems with respect to their strengths and weaknesses and also indicate the importance of having a mixed system of assessment in medical education.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Yes

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    To some extent

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    NA

The Authors should have worked on projects to assess the effect of different assessment methods among the medical students studying their pros and cons, at different set ups taking feedbacks and analysing the results obtained.

Undoubtedly, a combination of different assessment modules should be implemented as per the needs and resources available. This requires active participation of department staff, useful resources, and active time management followed by feedback to redesign the requirements.

Newer methods of assessments -mini CEX, CSR, PMPs, OSLER, and Mannequins are being used at different places.
